2023 REPORTS

LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 28th JANUARY
LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 25th FEBRUARY
It was a chilly start to the 2023 season however, the 5 anglers who braved the elements all caught fish. First fish of the season fell to Steve W, who then went on to record a further 14 fish for an estimated total of 20lb. Sandy also finished the day with his bag limit of 10 and the final count for the day was 36 fish (31 of which counted) for an estimated total of 62lb.
Another chilly day for this first visit of the season to Loch Insch. This time only 3 anglers were mad enough to come along but all were rewarded with fish. Top angler with 9 of the days 20 fish was Graeme. Graeme once again had the biggest fish of the day (and the best fish caught a long time) which was estimated at close to 20lb.

ELGIN TROPHY
LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 18th MARCH
Wet, muddy conditions greeted the 5 anglers but it was not enough to dampen their enthusiasm for attempting to win the Elgin Trophy...honest! Everyone caught a fish or two but, with a total of 12 fish, it was Steve W who finished top and retained the trophy for a second year. Click here to see a happy Steve W looking forward to the pleasure of having to pay to get the trophy engraved once again or here to see the results from previous competitions.

MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 8th APRIL
RESCOBIE LOCH
SATURDAY 22nd APRIL
A chilly start to the day for the 6 anglers who were looking forward to the first of three visits to this popular boat fishing venue. Unfortunately it didn't warm up and neither did the fishing! Only 4 fish were caught for a grand total of 8lb 6oz with 3 anglers blanking. The heaviest fish of the day, and sweeper winner, was caught by Davie and weighed in at 2lb 4oz. Hopefully things will have warmed up a bit before the next visit!
Another good days preparation for Uist for todays 6 anglers. Bright sunshine, windy and very little fish! The days total was 4 fish for 8lb with 3 anglers blanking. Top angler and sweeper winner (once again) was Davie with his 3lb 8oz rainbow trout. Things can only get better...hopefully!

MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 6th MAY
MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 27th MAY
Yet another tough days fishing - misty, breezy and cold. Surely it can only get better! An improvement in catches however with the 5 anglers keeping 13 fish (and returning another 5) for an estimated total of 31lb 14oz. With 7 fish Steve W finished top angler but it was Steve A who was the sweeper winner with the heaviest fish of the day, a 2lb 9oz rainbow trout.

Well the weather was slightly better this time - warm, sunny and windy, however the same could not be said for the fishing. The 4 anglers could only manage to catch 4 fish with 2 anglers blanking. Once again it was Steve A who was top angler with the heaviest fish. A 2lb rainbow trout. And the total weight for the day was 6lb 6oz.

FISHING TRIP TO SOUTH UIST 17 - 24 JUNE
For the thirteenth time since 2010, six anglers (Steve Williams, Steve Argo, Joe Campbell, John Robertson, Graeme Third and Sandy Wilson) fished the machair lochs of South Uist. The accommodation, as usual, was Carraview House. As usual the fishing conditions were 'challenging' with the lochs all down about 2-3 feet, bright sunny conditions and weed...lot's of weed! But at least we got some sort of fishing every day.

Monday, Day 1 - Two boats on Grogarry and one boat on Stilligarry. As usual Graeme got off to a good start by catching and losing some nice fish on Grogarry. Finishing with 2 fish including the best fish of the week a 2lb trout. The other three anglers (Sandy, Steve A and Steve W) on Grogarry blanked however. The other boat, on Stilligarry, saw Joe and John also fail to catch fish.

Tuesday, Day 2 - Two boats on Bornish (Joe, Steve W, Sandy and Steve A) and one boat on Upper Bornish (Graeme and John). Joe and John were top anglers today with 2 fish each while Sandy was the only angler to blank. The remaining anglers had 1 fish each.

Wednesday, Day 3 - The two boats on Altabrug today saw the best catches of the week. Joe was top angler with 5 fish, Steve A and Sandy had 3 each with John catching 2. The other boat, on Stilligarry, once again struggled with Graeme and Steve W failing to catch a fish.

Thursday, Day 4 - The two boats on Mid Ollay had a difficult time trying to find a weed free drift and at times had to resort to fishing from the bank. Steve W was the most productive with 3 fish while Joe also had a nice trout. It was planned for the other boat to fish Hallan, however due to the extremely low water conditions, the anglers had to resort to an alternative loch - Bornish, where Graeme caught 4 fish with Steve A blanking.

Friday, Day 5 - Everyone was hoping for a good end to the week's fishing however as usual it turned out to be the worst day of the week! The strong winds meant that boat fishing was ruled out and anglers resorted to bank fishing. Of the four anglers on Upper Kildonnan, only Steve A had 1 fish. From the bank on Upper Bornish, Steve W also had a single fish while Sandy blanked.

At the end of the week we found that the final numbers were down as this year it was decided that only fish over 10 inches would count. Also just to confuse things it was also decided that by wearing Johns gift of 'lucky socks' you would be deemed to be 'playing your joker' and the number of fish you caught that day would be doubled (don't ask!).

The final result was close but, with 8 fish, Joe was crowned champion and winner of the South Uist Cup for 2023. Steve A was runner-up (also with 8 fish) and Graeme had the best fish of the week, a 2lb trout on Loch Bornish. The total catch for the week was 36 fish.

A return visit for 2024 has been arranged for 15-22 June. Here's hoping the loch's have a bit more water and a lot less weed! Click here to see details of last year, previous years catches and a photo of Graeme and the best trout of the week.

LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 1st JULY
A breezy, showery day saw the four anglers catch and release a total of 34 fish (30 of which counted for the competition) for 60lb. Everyone caught fish and it was Steve A who found the hotspot and went on to catch 14 fish for an estimated total of 20lb. Some nice fish were caught and it was probably Graeme who caught the best fish of the day, at approx. 5lb.

LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 5th AUGUST
Nice conditions (cloudy and mild) for the full house of 6 anglers who came along today and practically had the place to themselves. The algae and weedy lochs must have put people off but we persevered on a day that turned out to be a game of two halves. Steve W caught 14 fish in the morning but could only manage to get one more in the afternoon. However, Steve A had a good afternoon and caught 8 to add to the 2 he caught in the morning. Once again the total for the day was 34 fish (29 of which counted) for an estimated weight of 58lb.

LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 9th SEPTEMBER
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 7th OCTOBER
A hot and sunny day, where shorts and suntan cream were the order of the day, saw the 5 anglers catch and release 18 fish for an estimated total of 36lb. Only one numpty (who shall remain nameless) failed to catch fish and with 8 fish it was Graeme who finished top angler on the day. At approx. 5lb Graeme also had the best fish of the day.
Another hard days fishing for the 4 hardy anglers who braved the elements today and it was a battle to see what would give up first. The torrential rain or our waterproof jackets. Well the rain won...in my case anyway! Good catches all round though as we recorded a total of 32 fish (31 of which counted) for an estimated total of 62lb. Top angler today, with 11 fish, was Steve A.

LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 2nd DECEMBER

Calm conditions for the four anglers who came along to the penultimate outing of the year. No great catches but at least everyone caught fish and as things were a bit slow in the afternoon, all agreed to an early finish. The total for the day was 23 fish (22 of which counted) for an estimated weight of 44lb and with 11 fish, Sandy was the days star angler.
