2022 REPORTS

LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 29th JANUARY
LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 26th FEBRUARY
Five hardy anglers attempted to fish the first outing of 2022. However, due to the fact that it was blowing a gale and they could hardly stand up never mind fish, it was decided to abandon the days fishing before it even began. Everyone made it home safely avoiding falling/fallen trees. Better luck next time!
Only 3 hardy anglers could make it to the first outing of the season and on a cold and windy day, struggled to find the fish. There were only 5 fish in total caught and, with 4 of them, Sandy Wilson was the top angler. Things can only get better and hopefully it might be a bit warmer the next time!

ELGIN TROPHY
LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 19th MARCH
A bright, sunny, breezy day (although not as windy as the last time!) saw a good turnout with 7 anglers attempting to win (or not!) the Elgin Trophy. The honour eventually fell to Steve Williams who couldn't help himself from catching and returning a total of 9 fish. With 6 fish, Graeme Third was runner-up and the best fish fell to Davie Bruce. The total catch for the day was 24 fish for an estimated total of 48lb.

MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 9th APRIL
RESCOBIE LOCH
SATURDAY 23th APRIL
Not quite the day the 6 anglers were looking for, on the first visit to this popular boat fishing outing, when they were faced with cold, windy conditions. With the hope that things would improve they thrashed away for the next 6 hours or so, to eventually catch a total of 5 fish! At 2lb 1oz, Steve Argo won the sweeper for the biggest fish at the weigh-in. He also expertly landed something even bigger (and angrier)...a duck, which was skillfully unhooked and released by his boat partner.
Although we have struggled here in the past we decided to give it the benefit of the doubt with a return visit, which for most of the 5 anglers was well worth it. Tricky conditions (sunny and windy) meant a bit of a slow start but this improved towards the end of the day resulting in 16 fish (12 of which were kept). Top angler was Dean (guest) with 7 fish, but it was Steve A who finished top club angler with 4 fish kept (7lb 12oz) and one returned. Dean also won the sweeper with his 2lb 2oz rainbow trout.

MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 7th MAY
MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 21th MAY
A much improved visit this time for the 5 anglers, and one guest, who managed to catch 26 trout (21 of which were kept) for a total of 48lb 4oz. Due to the algae, the water clarity was poor but once we found a clear area we also found the trout. Top angler with 8 fish (for a total of 15lb 14oz) was Steve Williams. At 2lb 2oz, Steve also won the sweeper for the heaviest fish as well as a fishery prize (a free days fishing for 2) for catching a 'tagged fish'. Jammy or what!
The best outing to Monikie so far saw the 5 anglers catch 32 trout (26 of which counted) for a total weight of 48lb 3oz. Top angler with 15 fish (10 of which counted, for 18lb 11oz) was Graeme Third. Although Graeme also caught a tagged fish (unfortunately though there was no prize this time) and returned a fish of approx. 4lb it was Steve Argo who took the sweeper for the heaviest fish at the weigh-in. A 2lb 3oz rainbow trout. Click here to see a photo of a happy Graeme Third.

FISHING TRIP TO SOUTH UIST 11 - 18 JUNE
For the twelfth time since 2010, six anglers (Steve Williams, Steve Argo, Joe Campbell, John Robertson, Graeme Third and Sandy Wilson) fished the machair lochs of South Uist. The accommodation, as usual, was Carraview House. As usual the weather all week was breezy and showery, but at least this year we got fishing every day.

Monday, Day 1 - Two boats on Grogarry and one boat on Stilligarry. Graeme got off to a good start with his best fish of the week, a 3lb trout on Grogarry. His boat partner, Sandy also had one fish. On the other Grogarry boat, John had 2 fish and Joe 1. The other boat, on Stilligarry, saw Steve A catch 6 fish and Steve W 4 (one of which was estimated at 2lb).

Tuesday, Day 2 - One boat on West Ollay and two boats on Mid Ollay. Graeme and Joe, on West Ollay, had one fish apiece with Joe taking the best fish of the week a trout estimated at 4lb (or 5lb if you listen to Joe!). On Mid Ollay, John and Steve A had 2 fish each and Sandy and Steve W had 1 and 3 fish respectively. Although Sandy and Steve W resorted to bank fishing due to the windy conditions.

Wednesday, Day 3 - John and Sandy, on Stilligarry, failed to catch any fish. Whereas, on Altabrug, Graeme and Steve W had 4 fish each and Joe and Steve A had 3 fish each.

Thursday, Day 4 - On Upper Bornish, Joe had 5 fish and Sandy one whilst on Lower Bornish Steve A had 3 and Graeme 2. Also on Lower Bornish, Steve W had his best day of the week with 11 fish (the largest of which was estimated at 2 1/2lb) whilst surprisingly his boat partner, John, failed to catch any.

Friday, Day 5 - The final day, on Mill, saw Steve A catch 3 fish and Sandy 5. The other two boats were on Upper Kildonnan. Joe and his boat partner, Steve W, had 2 fish each and in the other boat, John unfortunately blanked and Graeme caught 3. Graeme also had the most unusual catch of the week, a flounder...on a buzzer!

The final results saw Steve W finish top angler for the week, with 24 fish, and for the first time win the South Uist Cup for 2022. Steve A was runner-up with 17 fish. Joe had the best fish of the week on West Ollay, and also the best one landed since we have been coming, which was estimated at 4lb. The total catch for the week was 76 fish, which was also probably one of the best weeks we have had so far.

A return visit for 2023 has been arranged for 17-24 June (a week later due to the cottage already being booked for our usual week) so the weather conditions may be slightly warmer...and hopefully slightly less windy!

LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 2nd JULY
The day started off well, for the 6 anglers, with very pleasant weather conditions and a couple of fish early on. However things deteriorated around lunchtime when heavy rain came on. So much so that fairweather angler, Joe Campbell, decided to leave early as he didn't want to get his new waterproof jacket wet! Also Sandy Wilson, in an attempt to improve his catch, decided to 'be the fish' and throw himself into the loch and spend the rest of the day rather damp. By the end of the day the remaining 5 anglers had caught a total of 13 fish for an estimated total of 26lb. Joint top anglers Steve Argo and Steve Williams, with 4 fish each, split the sweeper and prize of a bottle of wine which was leftover from the fishing holiday to Uist.

LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 6th AUGUST
With the slight chance of showers Joe Campbell, not wanting to get his new waterproof jacket wet, did not make it today. However the remaining 6 anglers all caught fish and finished the day with a total of 35 fish (33 of which counted) for an estimated total weight of 66lb. The best outing here so far this year. A couple of decent fish were also caught (and tales of even bigger ones lost!) and top anglers were Steve Williams and Graeme Third with 11 fish each. After the toss of a coin Steve was the jammy winner of the sweeper.

DISTRICT SEA ANGLING COMP (BOB HARPER CUP)
ARBROATH - SATURDAY 27th AUGUST
Cancelled.

LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 10th SEPTEMBER
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 8th OCTOBER
The 3 anglers who, for one reason or another, couldn't make it today didn't miss much as the remaining 4 anglers struggled with the hot and sunny conditions. At the end of the day the grand total was 10 fish for an approximate weight of 20lb. Graeme and Steve W finished with 4 fish each and Sandy accounted for the remaining 2. Steve A blanked, although he did spend the afternoon asleep in his car! After the toss of a coin it was Graeme who won the 'big' sweeper..
A bright and breezy day saw the 4 anglers all manage to catch fish, finishing the day with a total of 23 fish (22 of which counted) for an estimated total weight of 44lb. Top angler on the day, with 11 fish, was Steve Williams.
Click here to see a photo of Graeme with one of the better fish on the day.

LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 5th NOVEMBER
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 3th DECEMBER
On a cold and showery day, the 5 anglers tackled Loch Insch for the final time this year. Most anglers fished honestly to land 26 rainbow trout for an estimated total weight of 52lb (the best outing here this year). One angler, who shall remain nameless, resorted to underhand tactics by getting casting lessons and advice from the fishery owner, and even bought the killer fly from him, in a desperate attempt to boost his catch. However at the end of the day, it was Graeme Third who finished top angler with 10 fish.
It was a cold and showery day that greeted the 4 anglers on the final day of the season and which would decide who would finish as Club Champion for 2022. It seemed like Graerme Third could do no wrong with his secret weapon, home made fly's, as every time you looked his rod was bent into another fish. And all good fish they were too including the best fish of the year which was estimated at 15lb. He was even catching them two at a time and finished the day with a grand total of 15 fish (10 of which counted) for an estimated total of 20lb. However, it was Steve Williams' 7 fish that meant he maintained his lead (just) to finish Club Champion for 2022. And we'll say nothing about the other 2 anglers who blanked!.
