2019 REPORTS

LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 19th JANUARY
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 9th FEBRUARY
The 2019 season kicked off, with the first of nine visits to Lochter Fishery, and saw all 5 anglers eventually managing to catch fish. The honour of the 'first fish of the season' went to John Robertson, however things went downhill after that as it was his only fish of the day. Davie Bruce proved that, after an absence of almost 3 years, he's still got it by finishing top angler on the day with 7 fish. Despite sections of the lochs being frozen over, a total of 20 fish were caught and released for an estimated weight of 40lb. Hopefully things may have thawed out a bit before the next visit!
Cancelled.

ELGIN TROPHY
LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 9th MARCH
Despite the blustery and chilly conditions (we're still waiting for the wind to die down, Steve A) it was almost a full house of members as 7 anglers took part in this years competition. It was obviously the thought of what prize last years winner, Steve Argo, would be providing that brought them all along. Everyone managed to catch a fish or two but, at the end of an exhausting day, there was one clear winner. With a great catch of 12 fish, it was Graeme Third who won the poisoned chalice (by the time you buy the prize for next year and pay to have the trophy engraved, you'll understand why!), sorry Elgin Trophy, for 2019...surprisingly for his first time. Graeme couldn't help catching bigger and bigger fish, finishing up with a nice double figure rainbow - the best fish caught here for some time! The total for the day was 29 fish, caught and released, (27 of which count) for an estimated weight of 54lb. Click here to see a couple of photos from the day.

RESCOBIE LOCH
SATURDAY 6th APRIL
MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 20th APRIL
A beautiful Spring-like day (heavy rain, strong wind and freezing cold) saw the 6 anglers set out from the boat house, full of expectation on this, the first of 4 boat fishing outings. Sadly the fish proved to be a bit uncooperative and at the end of the day only two anglers managed to catch anything. Graeme Third had 2 early on and Davie Bruce managed a further 2, later in the day. The total weight was 4 fish for 9lb 14oz with Davie Bruce winning the sweeper for the biggest fish, a 3lb 8oz rainbow trout.
The best days fishing here, at this popular boat fishing venue, for some time saw all six anglers managing to catch fish. And for a change the weather conditions were actually pretty good. Top angler on the day was Steve Williams who kept 5 fish (and returned a further 5) for a total of 19lb 4oz. Graeme Third was runner up with 8 fish, however he did manage to bag the heaviest fish (narrowly beating Steve Argo by 2oz), a 2lb 12oz rainbow trout. The total catch was 21 fish kept, with 10 returned, giving a total of 61lb 14oz for the day.

RESCOBIE LOCH
SUNDAY 5th MAY
MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 1 st JUNE
The second visit here this year saw slightly better conditions for the 5 anglers who went on to record a catch of 9 fish for 22lb 10oz. Top angler on the day was Steve Argo with 4 fish for 11lb - although it might have been a different result if Graeme Third had managed to keep hold of half og the fish he lost! Steve also thought he was off to a great start however, sadly, his first fish did not count (click here to see why!). However he did go on to take the sweeper with the best fish of the day, a 4lb 4oz rainbow trout.
Another good days boat fishing with ideal conditions. Although the fish were sometimes a bit tricky to catch, the 4 anglers managed to keep 15, and return another 5, for an estimated total of 39lb 7oz. Top angler on the day was Graeme Third who kept 5 and returned a further 4 for a total of 17lb 5oz. And for the second outing running, Steve Argo took the sweeper for the heaviest fish, a 3lb rainbow trout.

FISHING TRIP TO SOUTH UIST 8 - 15 JUNE
For the tenth year since 2010, six anglers (Steve Williams, Steve Argo, Joe Campbell, John Robertson, Graeme Third and Sandy Wilson) eagerly looked forward to a weeks fishing on the machair lochs of South Uist. The accommodation as usual was Carraview House.

However yet again Steve W had medical issues and unfortunately had to pull out at the last moment. Oh well, there's always next year (althought I'm sure that was said last year!).

But back to the fishing for the remaining five anglers:

Monday, Day 1 - Boats on Lower Bornish (2) and Mill. Graeme and Sandy had a couple of fish each on L.Bornish and Steve had one on Mill. Not a great start for Joe and John though who made the schoolboy error of not ensuring that their motor was working before starting to fish in windy conditions. I bet you don't make that mistake again!
Tuesday, Day 2 - Boats on Stilligarry (2) and Druidibeag. Once again most anglers had fish with Stilligarry proving to be the most productive and Graeme taking the best basket of the day, 5 fish.
Wednesday, Day 3 - Boats on Mid Ollay (2) and Upper Kildonan. High winds meant very little fishing today and John and Joe decided to take day off. The remaining three anglers bank fished at Mid Ollay where Graeme finished top with 3 fish.
Thursday, Day 4 - Boats on Grogarry (2) and Upper Bornish. Grogarry proved to be the best loch with both Graeme and Joe each taking 4 fish. This included the best fish of the week, a 3 pounder for Graeme.
Friday, Day 5 - The final days fishing for the week saw boats booked on on Altabrug (2) and Mill. Altabrug proved not only to be the best loch of the day, but also produced the most fish the week with the four anglers catching a total of 19 trout between them. Graeme was once again top angler on the day with 7 fish.

And on to the results. Normal service was resumed with Graeme finishing 'top angler' for the week with 21 fish. Joe was runner-up on 11. Graeme also had the best fish of the week, with his 3lb brown trout from Grogarry. The total catch for the week was 52 fish, slightly down on last years total of 54, but not a bad return for a week of very cold, strong, northerly winds.

A return visit for 2020 has been arranged (13-20 June) so fingers crossed we all make it this time and the fishing and weather mproves.

LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 29th JUNE
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 3rd AUGUST
Not only did the hot and sunny conditions keep the fish away, most anglers thought a barbecue was a better idea. Of the four anglers that did come along to thrash the water only two managed to catch fish. Steve Argo had two and Sandy Buchan one. so despite lots of fish showing, the days total was three fish for an estimated weight of 6lb.
Algae and poor water quality meant it looked like being another tricky day at Lochter. Not so for Club Champion Steve Argo though as he easily mangaed to catch his bag limit of 10 fish. On his first outing of the year, Joe Campbell managed a creditable 4 fish however the other 3 anglers could only account for one between them. Total for the day was 15 fish for 30lb. Click here to see a couple of photos from the day.

DISTRICT SEA ANGLING COMP (BOB HARPER CUP)
ARBROATH - SATURDAY 31st AUGUST
Cancelled.

LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 14th SEPTEMBER
LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 12th OCTOBER
Sadly only 3 anglers could make it to the first, long awaited, return visit to this popular fishery. Despite a poor weather forecast conditions turned out good and a total of 28 fish were caught and returned for an estimated total of 44lb. Top angler on the day was Steve Argo with a total of 16 fish and, although not weighed, John Robertson had the largest rainbow. Sandy Wilson also caught his limit of 10 fish.
A good turnout today saw the six anglers catch and return a total of 23 fish for an estimated weight of 46lb. The fish were not as accommodating as the previous visit and sadly two anglers blanked. Top anglers were Graeme Third and Sandy Wilson, with 7 fish each, but it was Sandy who won the sweeper (by a nose) with the aid of a toss of a coin.

LOCH INSCH FISHERY
SATURDAY 2nd NOVEMBER
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 7th DECEMBER
Cancelled.
The final outing, and best visit to Lochter for the year, saw all 5 anglers land fish to give a total for the day of 29 fish caught and returned for an estimated weight of 58lb. With five minutes to go Steve W caught his eighth fish to pip Steve A and Graeme Third to finish top angler on the day and take the final sweeper of the year.
