2018 REPORTS

LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 27th JANUARY
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 24th FEBRUARY
Despite the strong wind, freezing cold and ongoing ice breaking operations there was still plenty of fish being caught at the first outing of the year. The four hardy anglers managed to catch and return a total of 37 fish (35 of which counted) for an estimated total of 70lb. The catch included a number of fish around the 5lb mark and in a close run competition it was Steve Williams, aided by the toss of a coin (as both he and John Robertson finished with 11 fish), who won the first sweeper of the year.
Although he may not go to too many of the outings, Graeme Third showed the other three anglers that he still has what it takes by catching more than two thirds (no pun intended) of all the fish on another cold and windy day at Lochter. The trout proved frustratingly difficult to catch (well for most people anyway) and the final total for the day was 14 fish for an estimated weight of 28lb. Graemes 10 fish easily enough to win the sweeper.

ELGIN TROPHY
LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 17th MARCH
Another day of Baltic conditions and despite frostbitten fingers, and frozen rod rings, it was a close run thing to decide the winner of this years Elgin Trophy competition. Steve Argo and Steve Williams each finished the day with 9 fish, closely followed by last years winner, Joe Campbell, with 8. In addition to the trophy the prize, donated by Joe, was a bottle of wine, a voucher for a 'M&S Meal Deal' and a special 'Still Game' themed prize. Despite a tie for the number of fish caught, the trophy and prizes went to Steve Argo who, by virtue of catching the first fish, was deemed the winner for 2018. This saved the difficulty of trying to split the prizes and also cut down the cost of engraving the trophy with both names. The total for the day (for the 6 anglers) was 33 fish, caught and released, for an estimated weight of 66lb with most anglers catching fish (sorry John). Graeme Third couldn't quite match his previous performance and after getting, in his words, the 'mother of all fankles' then, in true Basil Fawlty style 'losing it' yanking his leader clean off he went home early! A great day was had by all and roll on the next outing - hopefully in better conditions now that Spring is here. Click here to see a photo of Jack and Victor.

RESCOBIE LOCH
SATURDAY 7th APRIL
MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 28th APRIL
There were high hopes that a slight change in the weather would mean a good days fishing for this, the first of four boat fishing outings. However that was not to be the case as the four anglers stuggled to find, or keep in contact with, any fish. The total for the day was two fish caught, one lost and two were broken. Steve W's 2lb 10oz rainbow beat Steve A's 1lb 10oz one to take the sweeper on the day.
Sadly, due to confusion over the date (it must be an age thing!), there were only 3 anglers at this boat fishing outing. At times it proved to be a bit of a struggle for two thirds of the anglers however not so for Sandy Wilson who managed to catch and release a total of 8 fish - twice the number of the other two anglers put together! Total catch recorded for the day was 12 fish for 24lb 6oz.

RESCOBIE LOCH
SATURDAY 12th MAY
MONIKIE LOCH
SATURDAY 26th MAY
The second visit of the season to this boat fishing venue saw our best catches here to date. The 5 anglers caught and/or returned 15 fish for a total weight of 33lb 14oz. Also, as a number of other fish were lost due to snapped droppers perhaps some people could do with another knot tying lesson from Joe Campbell! Top angler on the day was John Robertson with 5 fish.
Strong wind and rowing boats was a reminder, to some, of happy days fishing on Loch Ruthven. However, these days, thank goodness for electric outboard motors - as long as your battery lasts! None the less a good days fishing was had by the 5 anglers who managed to catch a total of 14 fish for 26lb 12oz. Top angler at Monikie, yet again, was Sandy Wilson who's 2lb 4oz trout narrowly beat Graeme Third's by 1oz.

FISHING TRIP TO SOUTH UIST 9 - 16 JUNE
For the ninth time since 2010, six anglers (Steve Williams, Steve Argo, Joe Campbell, John Robertson, Graeme Third and Sandy Wilson) made their way to to the Western Isles for a weeks fishing on the ma chair lochs of South Uist. The accommodation, for the fifth time, was Carraview House although we still have a soft spot for the Bank House at Lochboisdale. And who could forget the caravan!

This year however proved to be slightly more eventful and a short weeks fishing for one angler. Whilst looking forward to the following five days fishing, Steve W suffered a detached retina the day after arriving and, after a lengthy discussion with NHS24 and a couple of visits to A&E at Benbecula, flew to Inverness to spend the remainder of his holiday at Raigmore hospital. Oh well there's always next year!

But back to the fishing for the remaining five anglers:

Monday, Day 1 - Boats on Grogarry, Mid Ollay and Upper Bornish. Most anglers had fish and Upper Bornish proved to be the most productive loch.
Tuesday, Day 2 - Boats on Stilligarry and Lower Bornish. Once again most anglers had fish with Lower Bornish proving to be the most productive and Graeme taking the best fish of the week - a brown trout estimated at 3lb.
Wednesday, Day 3 - Boats on Lower Bornish, Upper Kildonan and Mill. Lower Bornish proved to be the best loch but With the wind picking up, most anglers struggled and the fish proved reluctant. Joe and Sandy were forced to give up on the boat and fished Mill from the bank, where Joe managed to tempt a couple of fish
Thursday, Day 4 - Boats booked for Altabruig and Mid Ollay howere Storm Hector was the winner for today and all fishing was cancelled.
Friday, Day 5 - The final days fishing for the week saw boats booked on on Grogarry, Upper Bornish and Upper Kildonan. Upper Bornish proved not only to be the best loch of the day, but also the best loch of the week when Steve and Joe caught a total of 25 trout between them. Sandy also gave up the opportunity of fishing Grogarry and caught a couple of fish from a hill loch instead.

And on to the results. For the first time Graeme was not the 'top angler' for the week, failing to make it nine years in a row. The honour instead went to Joe who finished with 20 fish for the week with Steve runner-up on 15. Graeme did record the best fish of the week however with his 3lb brown trout from Lower Bornish, The total catch for the week was 54 fish, slightly down on last year but with one man down and one day lost to high winds, not a bad return.

A return visit for 2019 has already been arranged (8-15 June) so fingers crossed we all make it this time and the fishing continues to improve.

LOCHTER FISHERY
SUNDAY 8th JULY
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 4th AUGUST
After the annual fishing trip to South Uist, Lochter was the venue for the first of 6 visits before the end of the year. Despite hot (26 C) and sunny conditions, all 5 anglers managed to catch fish and Graeme Third, with an impressive 8 fish, finishing top angler. The days total was 18 fish, caught and released, for an estimated 36lb.
With, once again, testing conditions and restricted to fishing the top loch only, the signs were not looking good. This proved to be correct with only 3 anglers struggling to catch fish and the other 3 leaving early. Steve A, Steve W and Sandy W each caught one fish and after the toss of a coin it was Steve A who took his first sweeper of the year. I don't know how he can sleep at night taking the money from poor pensioners/disabled anglers!

DISTRICT SEA ANGLING COMP (BOB HARPER CUP)
ARBROATH - SATURDAY 1st SEPTEMBER
Once again this sea angling, boat, competition was fished aboard the Altair out of Arbroath. As usual there were no great catches but each of the 3 club anglers and 4 guests, caught a selection of cod, saithe, wrasse and mackerel. Champion, and winner of the Bob Harper Cup for the fourth year running, was Graeme Third with 7 cod. For the record, approx. 20 cod were kept with a number of smaller fish returned. The heaviest cod at approx. 5lb 5oz was also caught by Graeme who narrowly beat Steve Argo's 4lb 13oz fish. Click here to see a couple of photos from the day.

LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 8th SEPTEMBER
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 6th OCTOBER
A slightly better days fishing this time however the weed, algae and weather still mean that catches were down on those from earlier in the season, This time the 6 anglers managed to catch and release a total of 17 trout for an estimated total of 34lb. Top angler, and proving that you don't need to see the fish properly to catch them, was Steve Williams with 6 fish.
Once again an improved days fishing. Despite leaving early, Graeme Third still managed to catch and return a total of 7 fish. However, with 11 fish (10 of which counted towards his total), it was Steve Argo who took the sweeper for top angler on the day. The total catch for the 6 anglers was 34 fish for an estimated 66lb.

LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 3rd NOVEMBER
LOCHTER FISHERY
SATURDAY 1st DECEMBER
For one reason or another a low turnout to this outing - the eighth visit of the year to Lochter. However the 3 anglers all had fish and still managed to catch and release 15 for a total of 30lb. Top angler and sweeper winner (don't spend it all at once!) once again was Steve Argo who, in a spell of just over 90 minutes, caught all 9 of his fish.
The final outing, a dour day at Lochter, saw the smallest turnout of the year with, for one reason or another, only two anglers attending. However both managed to catch fish - John Robertson leaving at lunchtime having caught one and Sandy Wilson sticking it out until he had caught two. So for the record, 3 fish for 6lb.
