2016 REPORTS

ELGIN TROPHY
LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 12th MARCH
After a break of 14 weeks it was good to get back fishing and the 5 anglers who took part in this competition all managed to get a fish or two. John Robertson, attempting to retain the Elgin Trophy, put on a spirited performance in the afternoon by adding a futher 5 fish to the one he caught in the morning and win the Trophy. Steve Argo, despite having caught 5 in the morning, failed to add to his total and finished runner up with Joe Campbell. We didn't get to see the prize that John was going to present to the winner so we'll just have to wait until next year now - assuming he doesn't win it for a third year running! 22 rainbows were caught, and returned, giving an estimated weight of 44lb for the day.

MIDMAR FISHERY - SATURDAY 26th MARCH
LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 9th APRIL
Almost a full house, with 7 anglers turning up on a breezy day to the first of three planned visits to this venue. However they didn't all manage to last the full 5 hours! Our fairweather angler, Joe Campbell, decided to call it a day after a couple of hours before the rain came on and wet his new waterproof jacket. Graeme Third (yes, Graeme Third!) at his first club outing in 35 months took the honours with 8 fish. The remaining 5 anglers also all caught fish to give a total of 23 rainbows, estimated at 46lb. Click here for a photo of a rare visitor.
Second time here this year, but it was a bit more of a struggle this time. The 5 anglers caught half as many fish as the last visit, finishing the day with 11 trout for an estimated weight of 22lb. Despite a couple of rain showers Joe Campbell managed to last the full day and put his new net to the test, catching 5 fish and winning the sweeper as well (well thats half of the net paid for). Steve W won the prize bottle of wine donated by the fishery - albeit thanks to the toss of a coin.

RESCOBIE LOCH - SUNDAY 24th APRIL
MONIKIE LOCH - SATURDAY 7th MAY
The first of two visits to this boat fishing venue, for brown and rainbow trout, had the 4 anglers struggling and scratching their heads. Despite reasonable weather conditions the fish didn't want to play ball and only two were caught (by Steve Argo and John Robertson). Steve A took the sweeper for the heaviest fish - a 2lb 6oz rainbow trout, and the total weight for the day was 4lb 8oz. Here's hoping the next visit is a bit better. Steve Williams kept up his winning streak by once again winning a bottle of wine in a raffle run by a visiting angling club.
A slightly poor turnout with only 3 anglers making the journey south to the first of two visits to this venue. Conditions were tough for rowing with a strong wind blowing most of the day. Top angler was Steve Williams who kept 5 and returned a further 3 of the days 10 fish total (22lb 13oz). His catch weighed in at 12lb 8oz plus another 6lb for the returned fish. He also had the biggest fish at 3lb 1oz. Steve Argo and John Robertson finished with one fish each. It must be an age thing as all three anglers were threatening to buy an electric outboard motor, however we have motors at the next outing and things can only get better!

RESCOBIE LOCH - SATURDAY 21st MAY
MONIKIE LOCH - SATURDAY 4th JUNE
Another tough day at Rescobie loch, with only one of the three anglers managing to land a fish. John Robertson caught the only fish of the day, a 1lb 12oz rainbow trout - even the osprey was missing today which should have told us something! As predicted at the last outing we now have our own electric outboard motors and the plus point being that they worked a treat with no discernible loss of power after motoring about the loch all day trying to find a fish. Click here for a photo from the day.
Second visit to this boat fishing venue and a better day than the first - the outboard motors helped though! Steve Williams was top angler on the day with 5 fish, returning another 2, for 14lb 13oz. Steve also took the sweeper for the heaviest fish - a 2lb 9oz rainbow. Sadly, John Robertson spoiled his record by blanking for the first time this year. The total catch for the day was 11 fish weighing in at 22lb 14oz. Click here for the usual photo of Steve Argo.

DISTRICT SEA ANGLING COMP (BOB HARPER CUP) - ARBROATH - SATURDAY 11th JUNE
ARBROATH - SATURDAY 13th AUGUST
For a change the weather was on our side and the competition went ahead, at the first time of asking, aboard the Ultimate Predator at Arbroath. The mackerel had not arrived yet so the skipper took the decision to sail out to the Bell Rock Lighthouse where, luckily for us, there were a couple of cod around (including one caught by Graeme Third, estimated at 5lb) to keep us interested. There were also a number of decent (but slightly undersized) ling, and a good wrasse, caught. Each of the 3 club members, and both guests, caught fish to give us a total of 15 cod for the day. Winner of the Bob Harper Cup, for the second year running, was Graeme Third with 3 cod. Click here for some photos from the day or here to see previous years results.
After monitoring the weather situation all week, convinced that the outing would be cancelled.....it went ahead! The 6 anglers (3 club members and 3 guests) had the boat (Ardent) to themselves so there was plenty of room for all they cod they were going to catch. However the fish had other ideas and there were only 3 small cod and 1 ling caught for the day...apart from hundreds of mackerel, which if nothing else provided a bit of fun. Well something had to cheer up Andy Williams after he managed to break his rod - cheap rod, not big fish! When he was not sleeping, Steve Argo took lessons in fish filleting from the skipper and has happily volunteered to fillet all the fish on any future trips. Click here for a couple of photos.

MILLBUIES LOCH - SATURDAY 27th AUGUST
ARTLOCH FISHERY - SATURDAY 10th SEPTEMBER
It must be over 20 years since we were last at this boat fishing venue for rainbows and brownies, so a visit was long overdue. Weather conditions were good with cloud and light winds and there were a couple of fish as well. Local angler, Joe Campbell, had the top catch of 2 brownies and 1 rainbow for 10lb 6oz, which included the best fish of the day - a 6lb 6oz rainbow (the best of the year so far). Everyone had fish and the total catch for the 4 anglers was 4 rainbows and 5 brownies (returned) for a total weight of 22lb 2oz. Click here for some photos on the day.
Another 'new' outing for this year as, once again, it must be about 20 years since we last visited this newly re-opened bank fishing venue. However perhaps we should have waited a few more weeks as the water was a bit low and I think they could have done with a few more fish in the loch. Still, 3 of the 4 anglers caught fish and the sweeper winner was Steve Williams who caught and returned 3 of the days 5 fish - one of which was estimated at about 4lb. Click here for a photo of him in action.

MIDMAR FISHERY - SATURDAY 24th SEPTEMBER
LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 8th OCTOBER
Second of three visits here this year, with attendance numbers down this time - probably due to the 'breezy' conditions and some rich anglers jetting off to sunnier climes! Only three anglers came along, however they all caught fish. Steve Argo was the top angler, catching and returning 7 of the days 15 fish (estimated at 30lb).
Only two anglers managed to come along on this warm and sunny day with not a breath of wind. Although there were plenty of fish moving, it was reported they were proving very hard to catch. No problem for Steve Argo however who, with his 5 fish (one of which was estimated at 4-5lb), took the big £2 sweeper. Sandy Buchan caught the only other fish and both had tales of the ones that got away!

MIDMAR FISHERY - SATURDAY 29th OCTOBER
LOCHTER FISHERY - SATURDAY 19th OCTOBER
The final visit here for this year saw all 4 anglers once again all catch fish. In fact the only angler to have blanked here this year was Joe campbell (however he did give up that day after only a couple of hours). A good day with Steve W finishing top angler, catching and returning a total of 11 (10 of which counted - 20lb) of the days 18 fish. In fact the only complaint was that, for once, there wasn't quite enough wind!
A poor turnout for the final outing of the year, however a temperature of minus 6 degrees may have had something to do with it. Or the fact that more than half of the three lochs were frozen over! This didn't stop the 3 hardy anglers that did come along though who all had fish finishing the day with a total of 13 fish for an estimated weight of 26lb. Top angler on the day was Steve A with 6 fish, just pipping this years champion, Steve W, to the big £3 sweeper. Steve W did finish with his best fish of the year, a 6lb rainbow..
