2014 REPORTS

ELGIN TROPHY
LOCHTER - SATURDAY 15th MARCH
MIDMAR - SATURDAY 5th APRIL
The first outing of the year saw the 'usual suspects' trying to get their hands on (or in some cases not!) the Elgin Trophy. At the end of the day the 6 anglers had kept 8 fish and returned a further 12 for a total of 49lb 4oz. For a while, much to their disgust, it looked like either Sandy B or Davie B was going to lift the trophy, but luckily for them Joe C came good and won, for about the hundredth time, with a 5lb 8oz rainbow trout. Best catch of the day was Sandy B who, with a total of 5 fish for 16lb, stormed into the lead in this years competition.
Click here for a couple of photos from the day.
A good turnout for the first of 'potentially' three outings here. Despite stories of up to 40 cormorants decimating the fish stocks, 7 anglers decided to give it a go in the belief that the problem had been resolved and the lochs had been re-stocked. The fact that only 4 fish were caught for the day, may have answered that question! Even Joe 'I caught 18 fish' Campbell blanked, swearing never to return. The only highlight was the draw for the sweeper between the 4 anglers who caught a single fish each. No photos from the day as the sight of Sandy B crying as Steve W won the sweeper would be too much to show. Will we be back? Watch this space.....

HADDO - SATURDAY 26th APRIL
BUTTERSTONE LOCH - SUNDAY 11th MAY
The first time here to this boat fishing, catch and release, outing and it didn't get off to a great start. A torrential downpour before we started put off our 'fairweather angler' Joe Campbell, who promptly about turned and went home. Had he waited another 10 minutes he would have seen the rain go off, and stay off for the rest of the day, to give a great days fishing. The remaining 6 anglers caught, and returned, a total of 21 fish (rainbows, blues and a brownie) as well as 'losing' as many again. Top angler was Steve W with 8 fish who was deprived of an extra £1 in the sweeper, by Joe's earlty departure!

It's been a couple of years since our last visit to this boat fishing venue and I would like to say it's good to be back. I'd like to say that, but......! Even the osprey was struggling to get a fish. On the day, the 4 anglers caught a grand total of 3 trout for 4lb 15oz. 'Top angler', with 2 fish, was Steve Argo who wins his first sweeper of the year. On a loch that used to be very popular with up to 24 boats, there was only another 4 boats out and I think there were only a further 3 fish weighed in. Despite being told 'you should have been here yesterday' - when apparantly they were hauling them out, it may be a while before we are back..... Sorry no photos!

LINTRATHEN LOCH - SATURDAY 24th MAY
LOCHTER - SUNDAY 8th JUNE
Sadly another venue that proved to be a bit of a struggle this year. Although a popular boat fishing outing, only 4 anglers made it along on the day. I would like to say they were rewarded with large baskets of fish however, despite good fishing conditions, only 2 fish (if you dont count a couple of small brownies and lots of perch) were caught for a total weight of 3lb 8oz. Even worse than Butterstone..... Weighing in at 2lb, Steve Williams had the slightly bigger fish.
Second time here this year and the catches were down slightly. All but one of the 6 anglers caught and returned a total of 17 fish for an estimated weight of 34lb. Top angler was Steve Argo with 6 fish. Fishy story of the one that got away was Steve Williams' 'big one' that took him down to the backing before the line parted and the fish swam off with the fly line. Luckily, by stepping into the loch and getting a couple of wet feet, Steve just managed to grab the fly line before it disappeared into the depths. Sadly though, the fish didn't hang about!

DISTRICT SEA ANGLING COMP (BOB HARPER CUP) - ARBROATH - SATURDAY 28th JUNE
RESCOBIE LOCH - SATURDAY 9th AUGUST
Here we go go again.....after much anticipation, anglers buying new tackle and preparing their bait the outing was cancelled - too windy!. A disappointment to the 6 anglers who were looking forward to this sea angling outing from the Mari Dawn at Arbroath. Especially as there were reports of lots of cod being caught. Not to worry though, as we are used to this happening, a reserve outing has been arranged for 30th August when we will try once again.
This was the third boat outing of the year so far and all 4 anglers agreed it was a good day with everyone catching fish. Total for the day was 9 hard fighting rainbow trout weighing in at 21lb 9oz. Top angler, with 3 fish for 7lb 9oz, was Sandy Wilson however it was Steve Argo who had the biggest fish and took the sweeper with his 3lb 9oz rainbow trout. Remind me Steve, is trolling allowed?

DELGATIE - SATURDAY 23rd AUGUST
DISTRICT SEA ANGLING COMP (BOB HARPER CUP) - ARBROATH - SATURDAY 30th AUGUST
A new bank fishing venue for this season - Delgatie Castle at Turriff. On a showery, windy day (far too treacherous for Joe Campbell) 5 anglers decided to give it a try and all but one (sorry Sandy B, but that'll teach you for saying you couldn't go wrong the last time) caught and returned a total of 33 fish. Top angler on the day was Steve Williams with 13 fish, followed by Steve Argo with 10. Click here for a couple of photos of Sandy Wilson in action.
At the second time of asking, this competition finally went ahead with 4 anglers fishing at the Bell Rock Lighthouse aboard the Ultimate Predator. A rough day, weatherwise, saw a couple of anglers groundbaiting however not even this was enough to help the catches. Only 7 small cod (and about 40 mackeral) were caught and Steve Argo, with 3 of them finished up winning the Cup. There were no sizeable fish, so catches were not weighed. Here's hoping for better next year!

LOCHTER - SATURDAY 20th SEPTEMBER
LOCHTER - SATURDAY 4th OCTOBER
The third of five outings to this venue this year. Catches were slightly up on previous visits and the 6 anglers caught and returned 20 fish for an estimated total weight of 40lb. Weather conditions were good and the morning proved to be better than the afternoon as all but 2 of the fish were caught before lunch. Top angler on the day was Sandy Wilson who, for the second outing in a row, caught 8 fish and lost a number of others. Click here for a couple of photos of Sandy Wilson in action once again.
A 'no show' by the owner of Haddo meant a last minute change of venue so, as it was the closest, the 6 anglers agreed it was back to Lochter. Unfortunately the thought of 6 hours standing about in the pouring rain proved to be too much for John Robertson who decided to give it a miss. Once again, it was better than the last time and the remaining 5 anglers caught and returned 25 trout (23 of which counted for the competition) for a total weight of 46lb. Best catch of the day fell to Steve Williams with 12 fish.

MIDMAR - SATURDAY 18th OCTOBER
LOCHTER - SATURDAY 1st NOVEMBER
After staying away from this venue for a few months, and now hearing that it was clear of its 'cormorant problem' it was time for a return visit. 4 anglers attended, on what was a very windy and testing day (far too nasty for Joe C), and managed to catch and return 14 fish for an estimated total of 28lb. Fish were caught in each of the three lochs and top angler on the day was Steve Williams who, in the last 5 minutes of the day, landed his 6th fish - beating Steve Argo's five!
A clash with a competition at Raemoir forced a change of venue so it was back to Lochter for the fifth time this year. Once again the 5 anglers weren't disappointed and caught and released a total of 19 fish (including three in the 6-8lb range) for an estimated weight of 38lb. Steve Williams' last fish, once again caught late on, gave him a total of 8 and enought to pip Sandy Wilson to the sweeper. Click here for a couple of photos from the day.

LOCHTER - SATURDAY 22nd NOVEMBER
A trip to Lochter Fishery (for the sixth time) saw the final outing of 2014. People sunning themselves on a cruise or others not wanting to get their new car dirty meant that there were only 4 idiots.....sorry dedicated anglers in attendance on a wet and windy day. As usual Lochter did not disappoint with everyone catching and returning fish to give a total for the day of 17 fish for 34lb. This also included two 'good fish' falling to Steve Argo and Sandy Wilson. Best catch of the day and sweeper winner, for a change, was Steve Williams with 6 fish.
