2012 REPORTS

LOCHTER - SATURDAY 24th MARCH
ELGIN TROPHY
LOCH INSCH - SATURDAY 7th APRIL
Not a bad turnout for the first outing of the year...a catch and release outing to Lochter Fishery at Oldmeldrum. The 5 anglers who took part caught 37 fish (36 of which counted for the competition) for a total weight of 72lb (2lb average per fish). Top angler on the day was, Club Champion, Steve Argo who caught 11 fish therefore winning the first of this years sweepers.....and he didn't even have to spend all day fishing from the beginners platform like he usually does! Although not weighed in, Steve Williams possibly landed, and returned, the best fish of the day. Click here for a photo of Steve W landing and returning his fish.
This years Elgin Trophy Competition, once again held at Loch Insch, saw the 6 anglers weigh-in a total of 9 fish (and return a further 2) to give a total weight for the day of 21lb 14oz. On the day, although Steve Williams caught the most fish (4 for 7lb 7oz), it was Joe Campbell who once again got his name on the trophy. No really big fish this year, but Joe's 2lb 9oz rainbow trout was the biggest fish of the day and he narrowly beat John Robertson, who was going for a hat trick of wins, to lift the trophy.
Click here for a couple of photos of the Champion.

LINTRATHEN LOCH - SATURDAY 21st APRIL
WAULKMILL - SATURDAY 5th MAY
Unfortunately not a great turnout for the first of this years boat fishing outings. Only 4 anglers managed to make the trip south to Kirriemuir for the first of two visits to Lintrathen Loch. Only 5 rainbows were presented at the weigh-in and the total weight for the day was a disappointing 6lb 5oz. Top angler, catching 3 rainbows and returning a number of small brownies, was Steve Williams with 4lb. Steve also the biggest fish of the day at 1lb 10oz. No photograph of Steve W and the biggest fish, but here's a photo of his boat partner Steve Argo deep in concentration.
The first visit to Waulkmill this year saw the best turnout so far. 7 anglers braved the wintery conditions although some lasted longer than others. Our 'fairweather angler' Joe Campbell lasted only one hour before he decided it was 'too cold'. Rumour has it that 'the best paid individual in BT' could probably still manage to get a couple of hours overtime in. At the end of the day there was only 5 fish to weigh-in and, with a further 2 returned, gave a total of 15lb 1oz. Steve Williams was the top angler with 4 fish (7lb 9oz) but it was Steve Argo who took the sweeper with his 2lb 13oz rainbow. Click here for a photo of this years 'top earner' to date.

BUTTERSTONE LOCH - SUNDAY 20th MAY
LOCHTER - SATURDAY 2nd JUNE
Even the ospreys knew better than to try and catch a fish today! Despite the sunny conditions, the 5 anglers motored all over the loch, tried every fly in the box and thrashed the water for 7 hours for a grand total of 2 fish weighing in at 4lb 7oz. Of the two jammy buggers who caught fish, Joe Campbell pipped John Robertson to once again prove he is the 'Butterstone Master'. It just goes to show what he can do if he fishes for longer than an hour!
Second time here this year, and it was almost as good as the first. The 8 anglers caught and returned 43 fish (41 of which counted for the competition) to give a total weight of 82lb. Top angler, and sweeper winner, was Davie Bruce with 12 fish. Graeme Third, at his first outing for some time, finished a close second with 10 fish and Steve Argo came strongly from behind with 8 fish to finish third. Click here for a photo of Davie and Graeme.

DISTRICT SEA ANGLING COMP (BOB HARPER CUP) - ARBROATH - SATURDAY 26th MAY
ARBROATH - SATURDAY 30th JUNE
After last years disappointment at not getting out, there were no problems with this years boat fishing competition fished aboard the Marie Dawn at Arbroath. It was calm, hot and sunny and even John Robertson would have kept his lunch down. The 6 anglers caught 37 cod (and a couple of wrasse) and at the end of the day it was Steve Argo who was crowned winner of the Bob Harper Cup with 9 fish for 19lb. Graeme Third was runner-up with 15lb 8oz (6 fish) followed by Steve Williams with 15lb (8 fish). Graeme also had the best fish of the day - a 3lb 8oz cod. Click here for some photos from the day, however none of Steve being presented with the Cup as he left it at home. Obviously confident of taking it back again.
I think everyone must have had enough sea angling after the last outing as this time there were only 3 anglers for this fishing outing (once again aboard the Marie Dawn) at Arbroath. Although we were a bit dubious of the skippers decision to go ahead with the trip, he nevertheless sailed out to the Bell Rock lighthouse. His decision was proved correct however and the conditions weren’t as bad as we first thought and everyone caught fish. No photographs or weights were taken but at least 8 decent cod, some mackerel and a flounder were kept and numerous saithe, wrasse and smaller cod were returned. And more importantly.....no sea sickness!

MIDMAR - SATURDAY 7th JULY
LOCH INSCH - SATURDAY 4th AUGUST
Unfortunately our Club Champion, Steve Argo, and a number of other anglers were unable to make this catch and release outing which left only Steve Williams and John Robertson to brave the elements. Although the lowest attendance for some time, if not ever, they still managed to catch 11 trout between them, giving a total of 22lb. 9 of the fish fell to Steve which meant that he won the sweeper.....a grand total of £2! (eat your heart out Sandy Buchan). Due to the lack of anglers and the pouring rain, no photos were taken.
Normal service was resumed and 5 anglers turned up for the second visit of the year to this bank fishing venue. Despite the sunny conditions, and thick patches of weed on all the lochs, 9 fish (with a further 4 returned) were caught giving a total of 33lb 11oz for the day..... which was an improvement on the last visit. Top angler was Steve Argo with 16lb 13oz, who also had time to give some fishing tips to his ghillie Joe Campbell. Sandy Wilson won the sweeper, and prize donated by the fishery, with the best fish of the day at 4lb 5oz.

LINTRATHEN - SATURDAY 8th SEPTEMBER
RAEMOIR - SATURDAY 22nd SEPTEMBER
4 anglers made the journey south for the second visit of the year to this boat fishing venue. Unfortunately although it looked like a good fishing day, the fish just didn't want to play ball. So much so that, after flogging the water for hours, Steve Williams and Steve Argo decided to call it a day and left early believing that it would be a fishless day. How wrong could they be and they were surprised to learn that Sandy Buchan managed to catch the only fish of the day. A 2lb 12oz blue trout. Click here to see a photo of Sandy Buchan's, 2lb 12oz, sweeper winning (his first in over 2 years I think), blue trout. Sandy would like to remind Steve A that he will be looking for interest on the sweeper winnings!
Since it was reported that Fedderate Reservoir was probably not worth fishing, it was decided to reschedule the outing and, after a gap of a number of years, pay a visit to Raemoir Fishery at Banchory. It was a pity that only 3 anglers were able to attend but those that couldn't make it were the lucky ones. With the sun splitting the sky and hardly a ripple on the water, only 3 fish gave themselves up. Yet again Sandy Buchan was the top angler with 2 fish (weighing 4lb 8oz) with Davie Bruce, after losing 4, taking the only other one. Still it may have just been down to the weather conditions on the day, and all agreed that it may be worth another go.

MOSSAT - SATURDAY 6th OCTOBER
MIDMAR - SATURDAY 20th OCTOBER
Despite the 'no show' from a fairweather angler, 6 anglers did turn up for this catch and release, bank fishing, outing. And the weather turned out to be not too bad after all..... One surprise was Peter Michie at his first outing since 2010...once again at Mossat. On the day, 27 fish were caught which at 2lb per fish gave a total of 54lb. Top angler, with 9 fish, was Steve Argo who took the sweeper depriving Sandy Buchan of a hat trick of wins.
Second time here this year and a better attendance this time. Even Steve Argo came along for a couple of hours before leaving to go to a wedding. You'd think he was desperate to catch fish and try to retain his title! At the end of the day the 5 anglers caught and returned 15 fish, and at 2lb per fish, this gave a total of 30lb. Top angler on the day was Steve Williams with 6 fish. Click here to see a thing of beauty.....the fish not Joe Campbell that is!

LOCHTER - SATURDAY 3rd NOVEMBER
INSCH - SATURDAY 17th NOVEMBER
The coldest day of the year so far, and despite some parts of the loch being frozen over, 5 anglers managed to brave the elements. One angler was a little bit late however as he checked out Loch Insch first.....no, thats the next outing John! It was a shame for Steve A as the frozen loch stopped him getting to his favourite spot.....the 'pensioners platform'. The total for the day was 11 fish for 22lb. Steve Williams deprived Sandy B of the sweeper by finishing top angler on the day with 5 fish.
Final outing (the best of the three here this year) and it was another cold one - although thankfully no ice this time. Despite catching 4 fish our reigning champion, Steve Argo, couldn't stop Steve Williams from increasing his lead to win the trophy for an 11th time. Top weight on the day was Joe Campbell with 9 fish (20lb). Steve Argo won the last sweeper of the year, as well as a 15 year old miniature of malt whisky (donated by Loch Insch), with his 3lb 11oz rainbow. The total for the day, for the 5 anglers, was 14 fish, with a further 15 returned, for 66lb 12oz.
