2010 REPORTS

WAULKMILL - SUNDAY 28th MARCH
LOCHTER - SUNDAY 11th APRIL
Not a bad turnout for the first outing of the year to Waulkmill Fishery at New Deer. The 7 anglers who took part caught 10 fish, and returned another 3, for a total weight of 35lb 6oz. Best catch of the day was for Steve Williams who weighed in 3 and returned 3 for a total of 13lb 6oz. It was Sandy Buchan however who, not only caught the first fish of the season but, took all 3 of his fish before any other angler had yet to land one. Sandy also took the first sweeper for 2010 with his 6lb 1oz rainbow trout (see photo). There were also a couple of casualties when Joe Campbell fell ill after an hour or so, followed by John Robertson who had to retire at lunchtime. It's also worth mentioning that Steve Argo left it late. After failing to land a number of fish he finally succeeded in getting one with 15 minutes to go.
Today the 5 anglers who found their way through the fog to this catch and release competition at Lochter Fishery, caught a total of 33 fish. 25 of which counted on the day to give a competition weigh of 50lb. Steve Argo made up for his slow start at the first outing of the season by giving a masterclass to the rest of the anglers, who had stopped for lunch, recording his limit of 10 fish by 12.30. He also went on to take another 8 fish in the afternoon as well. It has been said however that he was fishing from the OAP/disabled/ wheelchair access platform where the fish were actually giving themselves up! (Click here to see Steve's 'hot spot') No sour grapes from Sandy B who had to accept the fact that this sweeper had slipped from his grasp.

ELGIN TROPHY
LOCH INSCH - SUNDAY 25th APRIL
BUTTERSTONE LOCH - SUNDAY 16th MAY
Once again back to Loch Insch as Sandy Buchan desperately attempted NOT to retain his title...the thought of having to pay for another engraving was causing him to lose sleep. Another good turnout saw all but one of the 8 anglers catch their limit of 3 fish, and return another 8, for a total of 62lb 7oz. Heaviest fish of the day (at 3lb 1oz) was caught by John Robertson who narrowly beat Davie Bruce (by 1oz) to take the Elgin Trophy and the honour of holding the bottle of malt until next year. Steve Williams won the sweeper for the most fish/heaviest catch (5 fish for 10lb). Steve Argo reported that, due to a lack of funding, this years Inter Group Competition has been cancelled.

A popular outing but, for one reason or another, only 5 anglers could make it, today, to this boat fishing venue. For the record, with only 4 fish caught, the ones who couldn't attend didn't miss mutch. One angler blanked (our reigning Elgin Trophy Champion.....sorry John) and the rest had one fish apiece giving a total for the day of 8lb 11oz. There was also a couple of fish lost but the general feeling was that it was a bit of a struggle. Heaviest fish, at 2lb 12oz, fell to Sandy Wilson.

LOCH INSCH - SATURDAY 29th MAY
LINTRATHEN LOCH - SUNDAY 27th JUNE
Second time to Loch Insch this year and some of the better sized fish decided to put in an appearance. The 7 anglers weighed in 17 fish, and returned another 8, for a total weight of 63lb 9oz. There were no blanks and although the top catch of the day was for Davie Bruce (20lb 10oz) his 8lb 8oz fish was not enough to beat Ian Simpsons 10lb 2oz rainbow. Or as Davie put it 'the biggest fish I've caught and I still didn't win the sweeper'. Davie also returned another 8lb fish. Click here to see the day's best fish.
Apart from the torrential downpour towards the end of the afternoon it was a pleasant day for the 6 anglers taking part in this boat fishing venue for rainbow and brown trout. Everyone caught fish and the total for the day was 16 fish for 31lb 2oz. Steve Argo was the only angler to catch his bag limit of 5 fish but the best fish of the day fell to Sandy Buchan who won his second sweeper of the year with his 2lb 6oz rainbow trout.

INTER GROUP COMPETITION
BUTTERSTONE LOCH - SUNDAY 4th JULY
DISTRICT SEA ANGLING COMP (BOB HARPER CUP) - ARBROATH - SATURDAY 31st JULY
Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, this years competition (for teams of 4 anglers, from the North, East and West of Scotland) has been cancelled.

For details of previous years Inter Group Competitions please click here.

It was third time lucky for the Bob Harper Cup Competition when, after three years of trying, the 6 anglers finally managed to get out. The sea angling competition was fished from Arbroath aboard the Mari Dawn between 8.00 and 14.00. No sign of sea sickness this year and it was agreed that John Robertson missed a good days fishing. There were a total of 4 species caught - cod, pollack, wrasse and mackerel.....lots of mackerel. At the end of the day, Steve Williams was declared the winner with a total weight of 17lb 8oz. Graeme Third was runner-up (15lb 8oz) followed by Steve Argo (14lb 8oz). Steve also had the biggest fish of the day, a 5lb cod. Although no total weight, for the 6 anglers, was recorded 21 cod, 3 pollack and a lot of mackerel were kept. Click here for some photos from the day. Hopefully it will be a repeat of the days success when the next sea angling outing takes place on Saturday 18th September.

LINTRATHEN LOCH - SUNDAY 8th AUGUST
WAULKMILL - SATURDAY 4th SEPTEMBER
Compared to the previous visit (when 16 fish were caught), the days fishing was a disaster. You would think that some people must have known as, for one reason or another, only 3 anglers took part in this boat fishing outing. Star of the day and the only person to record a weight was John Robertson. Apart from a small brownie, a perch and two undersized rainbows, his 1lb 12oz rainbow was the only fish of the day. No change in the leaderboard then.
Second time back to Waulkmill this year and once again another good days fishing with every angler managing to land fish. The 6 anglers managed to catch a total of 13 trout and return a further 5 giving a total weight of 58lb 4oz for the day. The heaviest fish, at 11lb, fell to Steve Argo. This is the heaviest fish caught so far this year. There were also a further two fish in the 5-6lb range caught by Davie Bruce and Sandy Wilson.

ARBROATH - SATURDAY 18th SEPTEMBER
MIDMAR - SATURDAY 25th SEPTEMBER
This was the second sea angling outing for the year and surprisingly, after the high winds during the week, the 3 club members and 4 guests actually managed to get a day's fishing. As before there were lots of mackerel about but once you got through them there was the odd codling, saithe and wrasse to be caught. So, apart from the fact there were 4 sea sickness sufferers, a good day was had. And even if you didn't catch any fish, at least you got to see the Bell Rock lighthouse at close range.
Only 5 anglers made the trip to this catch and release outing at a blustery Midmar Fishery and were rewarded with a total of 17 fish for an estimated weight of 34lb. Although everyone managed to land fish, despite a late finish by Sandy Buchan, the top catch (with 6 fish) fell to Steve Williams.
Click here for a photo from the day.

MOSSAT - SATURDAY 2nd OCTOBER
LOCHTER - SATURDAY 23rd OCTOBER
Another catch and release outing, this time to Mossat Fishery. Unfortunately, due to one thing or another, only 4 members could make the trip. It would be hard to match the number of fish that were caught last year (5 anglers, 73 fish) but 33 fish was not bad going. The 10 fish maximum per angler gave a total for the day of 56lb. Although there was no sweeper to be won, top angler on the day was Steve Argo with 14 fish...slightly down on the 25 he caught last year. Steve Argo in action.
Second time this year to this catch and release outing but, unfortunately, only 4 anglers could make it. Steve Argo showed he is still the 'Lochter Expert' as he caught and returned 12 fish to take his third sweeper of the year. Most of his fish came from from his favourite hotspot....the beginners/disabled/ pensioners/kids platform. 22 fish counted for the day to give a total weight of 44lb. The only 'notable' fish of the day (possibly a Club Record) fell to John Robertson. Click here for a photo of the monster.

WAULKMILL - SUNDAY 7th NOVEMBER
LOCH INSCH - SATURDAY 2Oth NOVEMBER
Third time here this year and yet again another good days fishing...for some. All but one of the 6 anglers (I wont say who it was that blanked) managed to catch fish to give a total for the day of 13 fish kept, and 6 returned, for 55lb 11oz. Heaviest catch (20lb 11oz) and heaviest fish (7lb 7oz) yet again fell to Steve Argo. Steve also returned an even heavier fish after his bag limit was reached.

The final outing of the year was attended by 5 anglers who managed to catch a total of 12 fish and return another 3 for a weight of 33lb 3oz. Although Steve Williams had the heaviest bag (11lb 5oz) and also the heaviest fish (3lb 5oz) of the day, it was Steve Argo who easily managed to hold onto his lead to be crowned Club Champion for the third time.
