After a relaxing night in Wick, with Jim Harrold attempting to get out through the bedroom door to wander around the digs
bollock naked (perhaps trying to copy Scot Gordons L'peeinadrawer episode) it was on to day 2 of the annual trip north.
The weather conditions didn't change much for the better and, although the wind had dropped
slightly, it remained sunny all day long resulting in lots of complaints about sunburn. Fish were still taken though
with Sandy Wilson the top angler, finishing with 5 fish. Heaviest fish of the day, which weighed in at approx. 2lb,
fell to Steve Williams.

Sixth year here, to Loch Watten, and the weather didn't get much better...still too sunny. With only 9 brown trout for 9lb 8 1/2oz,
catches were once again down on the previous year (12 fish for 10lb 1 1/4oz) although 3 of this years fish were over 1lb.
'Local expert' Neil MacCallum once again was the star
of the day, getting his name on the cup for the eleventh time (five years in a row) in the twenty three years that the competition
has been running. He finished the day with 5 trout for 4lb 5 1/4oz, well ahead of Graeme Third (2 fish, 2lb 2oz) and
Steve Williams (1 fish, 1lb 12 1/4oz). Jim 'tackle snatcher' Harrold (yes Jim Harrold!) finished fourth with a trout of 1lb 5oz.
Heaviest trout of the day, at 1lb 12 1/4oz, fell to Steve Williams who, thanks to Steve Argos suggestion, took the prize
of a double sweeper (thats a big one you've missed Sandy B). John Robertson failed to make it three years in a row and instead, the
coveted 'Cod Heid Cup' went to Barry Mitchell. Barry tried a bit of fish juggling on the boat and his trout was only to glad to
take the opportunity to slip over the side to freedom. Had John owned up to losing his wallet (halfway up the loch during a 'comfort
break' ashore) a bit sooner the destination of the Cod Heid Cup may have been somewhat different. Thanks must go to Neil for
volunteering to motor back up the loch with John in search of the missing wallet. It was quite easy to find I believe as there was
a swarm of about 2000 flies showing its location!
After giving out the prizes, Steve Argo thanked everyone for coming and added that he has already made the bookings for next year.
Thursday - St. Johns and Friday and Saturday - Watten.

The day started off quite well with the weather looking good for fishing. A slight breeze and overcast conditions.
But this did not last long with the sun splitting the sky and the wind just disappearing to a flat calm.
The Norths team of four were Steve Argo, Joe Campbell, Sandy Wilson and John Robertson...our STAR man.
For some of us it was a very long day with nothing much happening, although I did manage to catch 1 and lose 1
(which proved disastrous at the final weigh in). Sandy Wilson also struggled with 1 fish of 2lb 12oz, only 1oz off
equaling the heaviest fish. Joe Campbell had 3 fish and lost another 2 (another disaster), but John Robertson
landed his limit of 6 fish for 13lb. This was not the heaviest bag of the day though as Tom Black also landed
6 fish for 13lb 10oz and Gordon Snedden had the heaviest with 6 fish for 13lb 12oz. The winners, East, landed 12
fish for 24lb 8oz, runners-up, North, had 11 fish 23lb 5oz and third was the West with 7 fish for 16lb 2oz.
The Individual Champion, for the heaviest bag, was Gordon Snedden (East) with 13lb 12oz and the Heaviest Fish
also went to Gordon with 2lb 13oz.

Bit of a poor turnout to this boat fishing outing at Kirriemuir with, due to one reason or another, only 4 anglers
taking part. 12 fish were kept, and another 2 returned, giving a grand total of 26lb 7oz. Steve Williams was
the only angler to catch his bag limit of 5 fish, and return another 2, and also take the sweeper for the best
fish of the day weighing in at 2lb 9oz. Jim Harrold had the most unusual catch of the day...a rainbow trout
with a hair lip!

For the second year running there is no winner of the Bob Harper Cup. The re-scheduled competition went ahead,
fished for the first time out of Arbroath, but yet again we were unlucky with the weather. After one and a half hours
all 7 of the anglers agreed that the weather was going from bad to worse and, since there was no fish being caught anyway,
reluctantly it was time to call it a day...even though John Robertson was begging us to stay out longer. There's always
next year John. Sorry, I said there was no fish being caught but in fact there was one. A small cod,
caught by Andy Williams (guest), which was just big enough to win the sweeper.

Note: Perhaps the next time Jim Harrold suggests Waulkmill he might even be able to come along. On a warm, sunny, windy day the 9 anglers and 1 guest thrashed away and eventually weighed in 16 fish, and returned a further 7, for a total of 57lb 12oz. Top angler on the day was Joe Campbell with 7 fish for 17lb 5oz. Joe also took the sweeper with a 3lb 11oz rainbow trout. Click here for a photo. |
Fish were eventually caught and the final total for the day was 11 rainbow trout (all of which were returned) for an estimated total of 22lbs. Top angler on the day was Steve Williams who took the sweeper for his 4 fish. |
